a bit of history

○ In the Middle Ages, when people traveled around France in horse-drawn carriages, Pont-Audemer was the stronghold of the tannery industry. Thierry Hermès, a saddler originally from Krefeld, perfected the art of tanning and saddlery here from 1827 to 1838. Later, he and his sons opened the world-famous luxury store on Rue Saint-Honoré in Paris. A tour in the footsteps of Thierry Hermès is offered by the Tourist Office. The town of Pont-Audemer intends to dedicate a street to him in order to revive the memory of this special citizen of honor. His interesting biography was published in 2023: Sur les traces de Thierry Hermès : Une histoire franco-allemande par excellence by Pierre Sommet
